Y Shed community hub is looking for a new cafe operator

Since opening its doors in 2019, the historical Grade II listed hub Y Shed in Meliden, near Prestatyn, has been a hit with locals and visitors from further afield.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Y Shed continued to buck the trend and last year welcomed an average of 70,000 visitors through its doors. At the heart of the building – an old railway goods shed, funeral parlour and warehouse – is a cafe which has become a go-to-venue for visitors. But after three years and a pandemic, current cafe operator, Rachel Roberts, wishes to have some more family time, opening the door for new people to take over.

Charitable housing association, Grŵp Cynefin, which runs Y Shed, said this was an amazing opportunity for an individual or business who could take the cafe to the next level.

“Although sad to see Rachel go,” said Mair Edwards, Grŵp Cynefin’s Head of Community Regeneration, “this is an exciting opportunity for the right person. The lucky leaseholder will be coming into a kitchen fitted with top-spec appliances, beautifully furnished and set in outstanding area with a loyal client base. In return we’re looking for a provider who can deliver a terrific menu, good coffee and a great vibe.”

Alongside the cafe, Y Shed is home to other businesses including a gift shop, podiatrist, sportswear shop and beautician. An inhouse gallery showcases art and crafts from more than 27 different artists, all of whom sell through Y Shed’s shop.

“All of the businesses here have benefitted from support from our inhouse team, whether that’s marketing advice or help with finding grants during the pandemic.

“The new cafe operators will also be supported to help them get settled and find their feet – its a package unlike any other locally. The rent is competitive for a cafe of this size and among some of the lowest in the area. The opportunties here are plentiful and the cafe could be developed in many ways,” added Mair.

The closing date for expressions of interest is August 1. For an initial chat call Y Shed on 01745 855859 or email [email protected]
