Exciting times lie ahead for the Welsh Hospitality industry as University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) hosts Wales’ inaugural World Young Chef Young Waiter (WYCYW) competition.

UWTSD brings this exciting international opportunity to the young people of Wales for the very first time in 2022, and will host the competition for at least the next 3 years.

Established in 1979, the World Young Chef Young Waiter competition aims to promote careers in hospitality, and is open to all professional chefs and waiters under the age of 26* who live and work in Wales.

Entrants will encounter some of Wales’ leading hospitality figures on an expert judging panel, build key skills and make links with other competitors in a fun, challenging and rewarding environment.

Applications are now open, and will close on 31st September. The 2022 Wales finals will take place on 31st October and 1st of November at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, and winners of this competition will compete in the world finals in Monaco on 15th-16th November.

UWTSD’s long history of Higher Education in Wales includes a well-established school of Hospitality and Tourism, bringing enhanced opportunities to the people of Wales. With strong links to businesses and industry partnerships that elevate students and communities, the University is delighted to host the Young Chef Young Waiter competition and expand this network to incorporate the wider Welsh Hospitality sector.

The competition has received sponsorship from Seren Collection, a luxury hospitality group that already works closely with the University to provide professional placements and industry opportunities for students studying BA International Gastronomy Management.

Dr Jayne Griffith-Parry, Programme Manager for International Gastronomy Management at UWTSD, and chair of judges for WYCYW Wales, says: “The young talent we have in the Hospitality industry is staggering. It’s been lovely to see the camaraderie and professional insight gained by those competing in other nations, so it is with great excitement that I open our Wales competition for applicants.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Welsh competitors to take their place on the World stage, build on current skills and enhance their careers for the future, whilst meeting with those within the wider world of Gastronomy and Hospitality.

“I welcome all aspiring chefs and waiters to enter the competition and take their chance against contemporaries… What an opportunity this is for Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David as it supports the Hospitality industry.”

Anyone interested can enter now and become part of this exciting development in Wales’ burgeoning food scene.
