A new plan to increase the number of pupils in Welsh-medium education has been approved.

Newport City Council’s latest Welsh in Education Strategic Plan was formally approved by Welsh government back in July.

The plan, which covers the period from September 2022 to August 2032, sets out the steps the council will take to meet Welsh government’s overall target of increasing the number of Year 1 learners accessing education through the medium of Welsh.

It also sets out what steps the council will take to:

    • increase the number of Welsh learners using Welsh outside of the classroom
    • increase the number of classes for pupils with additional learning needs learning in Welsh
    • increase the numbers of teachers and staff being able to teach Welsh and in Welsh

The plan ties in with the council’s new five-year Welsh language promotional strategy, and our vision that everyone in Newport can use, see and hear Welsh as a living language in all parts of life across the city.

Commenting on the plan, Councillor Deb Davies, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for education and early years, said: “I’m delighted that our latest plan has been formally approved by Welsh government.

“Not only does the plan set out a practical path to meeting government’s expectations, but it also reflects our ambitions as a council for where we want to see Welsh medium education in ten years’ time.

“I’d like to thank our officers for their work in putting this plan together, along with all of our partners who contributed to the process.”
