A former seasonal worker who joined Amazon while completing his master’s degree has been appointed Site Leader at the company’s Swansea fulfilment centre.
Chris Bailey, who was born and raised in the local area and lives just 15 minutes from the site, first joined Amazon in 2010 as a seasonal associate.
At the time, he was completing a master’s degree in business management, specialising in operations.
After being accepted onto several graduate schemes, Chris decided to remain with Amazon and became only the second graduate to work at the company’s Swansea fulfilment centre.
Over the following 14 years, he progressed through almost every level of the business, moving from Area Manager to Operations Manager before joining Amazon’s service transportation team.
As Regional Operations Manager for the West Cluster, Chris was responsible for seven sites stretching from Swansea to Swindon and as far north as Redditch.
During this period, he also helped shape Amazon’s Delivery Estimate Accuracy strategy by introducing mechanisms which remain in place across the network today.
Chris returned to the Swansea fulfilment centre in 2024 and officially passed his Site Leader assessment in February this year.
His appointment sees him take charge of one of only three Amazon buildings in the UK to combine inbound, outbound and customer returns operations under one roof.
The Swansea site also delivered a record-breaking festive period in 2026, with strong gains across all three areas of its operation.
Speaking about his appointment and his career with the company, Chris said: “I really love this building, and I love what Amazon has given me. I’m naturally quite introverted, and Amazon has stretched me and pushed me outside my comfort zone. Early in my career, I realised I had to become comfortable being uncomfortable, because that’s where true growth comes from. By the end of this year, I’ll be completely different to how I started it – that’s the thing that still amazes me about working here.”
Chris said the variety of opportunities available within the business had played an important part in his own progression.
He added: “The really cool thing about Amazon is that there’s so much under its scope – you can move between different teams, and there’s a role to fit everybody’s niche. My advice to anyone considering joining would be to stay open to new opportunities, lean into your strengths, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. It’s been a journey, and I’m really proud of what the team here in Swansea continues to achieve.”
