Next year, the Heritage Hub at Treharris Boys & Girls Club will celebrate their 100thyear since the club’s opening in 1923 and to celebrate the centenary, will be delivering a year-long programme of events and workshops with the aim of uncovering local heritage, designing, and creating a permanent space to preserve the area’s rich history.

The Heritage Hub is dedicated to the everyday histories of the Taff Bargoed Valley’s working-class communities from pre-industrial times through to the present. So far, young people aged 7 – 18 have designed monuments, engineered 100ft scale trees and created their own marching band, which are all activities funded by the Welsh Government’s Summer of Fun initiative.

Each installation in the future heritage space will be designed and built by the local community and young people. The aim of the project is to bring communities together through a motivated effort to uncover and preserve local history and help rejuvenate the area with the creation of new local amenities that all can enjoy.

Children’s Champion, Cllr Lisa Mytton, said “I’m so immensely proud of the work that takes place at the club the whole team work so hard to support young people in the area with such great opportunities, activities etc the installation of this heritage project is so very exciting, and I can’t wait to see the results of all their hard work.”

Heritage Champion, Cllr David Isaacs, said “I fully support the creation of a local history museum at Treharris Boys and Girls Club celebrating their 100th birthday. The Residents of Merthyr Tydfil are rightfully proud of the role the town played during industrial revolution. The creation of the museum within the club will bring to life the history of the surrounding area for the future generations who I hope will continue to use the club for the next hundred years.”
