Club sale drives £8k donation to end of life charity

Members of a closed club and Cardiff Bus staff have donated £8000 to a leading end of life charity in memory of late colleagues.

The Tudor Street Transport Club closed in 2019 and was sold.  Following distribution of monies to members and to pay final bills, the group decided to donate the remaining funds to Marie Curie.

They met the team at the charity’s Cardiff and the Vale Hospice in Penarth to hand over the donation.

Marie Curie provides essential nursing and hospice care for people with any terminal illness, a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death, and bereavement. It is the largest charity funder of palliative and end of life care research in the UK.

A Cardiff Bus driver for 20 years, Colin Wheeler, who is also Vice Chairman of the union, said:   “Some of our ex-colleagues have spent their last days there, one of mine who was a close friend, Terry Morgan, spent his last couple of days down there as well, so we thought we’d donate the money once again there after we had a few years ago.

“Terry died about 5 years ago, and it definitely had a good impact on his final days.  I think Terry’s wife and family really appreciated the time he had there and the support they had.

“The Transport Club had been going for nearly as long as Cardiff Bus I think.  But because of the cost of living and everything else, it just had an impact on the demise of it.  The council wanted to re-develop Tudor Street as well and so it was sold to them.”

Marie Curie Corporate Fundraising Lead for Wales, Charli Thomas, accepted the donation and said: “We’re so grateful to the former members of the Transport Club for this significant donation, which will help others like their late friends and colleagues receive a good end of life care, both at our hospice and in the community.”
