How to build credit while renting

Many renters aren’t aware that rent payments haven’t historically counted towards your credit score. You could have been paying £1,000 a month without fail and credit reference agencies wouldn’t have a record of it. That gap can make it harder to secure a mortgage, a personal loan or even access better credit card deals later.

The good news is that things are changing. With a few practical steps, those regular payments can help you build a track record that shows you handle money responsibly.

    What is rent reporting?

Rent reporting turns your monthly rental payments into information lenders can actually use. When you pay your rent on time, the reporting service logs each payment much like a credit card or loan repayment.

In the UK, this doesn’t happen automatically, so you’ll need to join a reporting service that forwards your rental data to a credit reference agency. Each provider works slightly differently, but you generally confirm your rent amount, connect your bank account or upload proof of payment and let the service handle the reporting.

Some reporting services are free, while others charge – so make sure you’re aware of the terms.

Some landlords and housing organisations already use the Rental Exchange, which submits rent information directly to Experian. It’s worth asking your landlord first, as you may already be part of the scheme without realising.

What are the benefits of rent reporting?

Using a rent reporting tool removes the need to gather months of bank statements just to demonstrate consistent payments. When you apply for another tenancy or start preparing for a mortgage, having a clear, verified record of punctual payments can speed up the process and reduce the back-and-forth.

Once reporting is in place, each on-time payment adds to your credit file and strengthens your overall profile. A steady record of managing a major monthly expense reassures lenders that you handle financial commitments reliably.

For anyone starting out, this makes a big difference to your credit score as lenders can see your steady financial habits in real-world terms. Just remember that missing payments can also impact your score in a negative way.

How can alternative data boost your credit report?

Alternative data covers everyday bills that don’t traditionally appear on your credit file, such as mobile contracts, broadband, energy accounts and certain digital subscriptions.  Paying these with a credit card gives lenders a broader view of how you manage regular, predictable costs. However, it’s important to remember that borrowing money costs interest unless paid in full, and missing payments will damage your credit score ¹

Paying your phone bill, utilities or subscription services on time each month shows routine financial discipline. If you’ve never borrowed before, a solid track record of keeping these accounts up to date gives lenders evidence that you maintain commitments and stay organised with recurring payments.

How does rent reporting fit into your overall plan?

Rent reporting works best when it complements other healthy credit habits, such as responsible credit card use and periodic checks on your credit file. If you use a credit card for manageable monthly expenses, like fuel, groceries or travel, and clear the balance in full, lenders can see that you handle revolving credit sensibly.

This approach also encourages you to monitor your progress. Reviewing your credit report every few months helps you spot mistakes, understand what influences your score and make changes if something isn’t moving in the right direction.

¹ Representative Example: 34.9% APR representative (variable). Based on a credit limit of £1,200 and a purchase rate of 34.9% p.a. (variable). Terms and conditions apply. Subject to status. 18+. If you make only the minimum payment each month, it will take you longer and cost you more to clear your balance.
