Following the successful launch of Popeyes® first UK Drive-Thru restaurant in May, which saw customers queueing from 4am to get their hands on the famous Louisiana Chicken Sandwich, American fried chicken restaurant, Popeyes®, has today announced Cardiff as the city for its first Drive-Thru in Wales, opening later this summer.

Renowned for its Chicken Sandwich that ‘broke the internet’ when it launched in the US and its world-famous ‘shatter crunch’ chicken, the all-new Popeyes® UK Drive-Thru restaurant will offer the brand’s full mouth-watering menu, which includes the much-loved Signature Louisiana Chicken, Hot Wings, Tenders and Popeyes® Biscuits with gravy, seven days a week.

What’s more, the new Popeyes® restaurant will also be serving its new breakfast menu that offers a twist on British breakfast favourites, including Big Breakfast Rolls and a variety of sausage, bacon, egg and cheese muffins, alongside Cajun hash browns, and Louisiana buttermilk biscuits served with cinnamon sugar or Nutella®.

Popeyes® is set to pull out all the stops to showcase its Southern hospitality as it brings a taste of Louisiana to Cardiff for a second time following the successful launch of its restaurant on St John Street earlier this year, located next to the city’s iconic castle.

The Drive Thru will officially open its lanes later this summer. With eager chicken-lovers queuing for up to 12 hours in anticipation of the official openings in other locations nationwide, and the popularity of its first Drive Thru opening in Rotherham, guests are advised to arrive early to be in with a chance of winning exclusive prizes throughout opening day.

Chicken fans can be in with the chance of winning a famous Chicken Sandwich at the opening by signing up via the Popeyes website (at https://popeyesuk.com/restaurants/cardiff-bay-drive-thru). More giveaways will be announced closer to the launch of the Cardiff Bay restaurant, and those who sign up will be the first in the know.

The all-new Drive-Thru restaurant is the brand’s 9th opening in 2023 and marks the chain’s 28th  UK site since opening its first UK restaurant in Stratford in 2021.

Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes® UK, said: “After the success of our first opening in Cardiff this March, we’re thrilled to announce that a drive thru restaurant will also be landing in the Welsh capital this summer. Our St John St opening saw queues from the early hours, and we’re expecting to see the same in our drive thru lanes at our second site in Cardiff Bay.

“We launched our first drive thru into the UK last month in Rotherham, which was the biggest opening Popeyes has ever seen, not just in the UK but globally. We’re continuing to build new drive- thrus across the UK, the Sixfields site will shortly be followed by Cardiff Bay and Barnsley this summer and our first in Scotland later this year.”

The new restaurant will be located in Cardiff Bay Retail Park on Ferry Road. Plans include seating indoors, a dual-ordering lane to reduce expected vehicle queues, kerbside collection when you order online via the Popeyes website and car park for customers who would like to eat inside the 70-seat restaurant.

Popeyes will be expanding their Drive Thru restaurant offering throughout 2023, following an opening in Northampton early this summer, followed by Barnsley, and the first Drive Thru in Scotland.
