The first phase of the Cardiff Market restoration project will begin at the end of September with work to the building’s historic glass roof.

Alongside essential repairs to the roof of the Grade II* listed Victorian market, phase 1A of the restoration programme will also see new solar panels installed, reducing the building’s carbon footprint as part of the city’s One Planet Cardiff climate change commitments.

Opened in 1891, Cardiff Market is home to scores of independent traders. Traders will remain open for business throughout the roof restoration, with work taking place in an enclosed acoustically and dust-sealed space to minimise disruption.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation & Performance, Cllr Leo Thomson, said: “Having served residents and visitors for more than 130 years, Cardiff Market is one of the city’s most important heritage assets and an important part of its identity. This is the start of a multi-million investment in its restoration which will safeguard its future and help ensure it remains a vibrant destination at the heart of the city centre for generations to come.”

“Fixing the historic glass roof is an important first step that will help preserve the market’s unique character, address essential maintenance issues, and with the addition of solar panels, help enhance its long-term sustainability.”

Phase 1A is expected to take around 12 months to complete, after which phase 1B will commence. Together, these works will provide the foundations for the wider restoration programme.

In addition to the roof restoration and solar installation, work will also take place to the lantern windows, lighting and electrical systems during phase 1. The ground floor toilets will also be fully refurbished and stonework and lead repairs to the Trinity Street façade completed.
