Locum tenens, from the Latin meaning “to hold the place of,” refers to physicians who temporarily fill in for other doctors on leave from their medical practices. For surgeons, locum tenens offers an appealing career path that provides flexibility and variety but also comes with unique challenges.

In today’s healthcare landscape, the locum tenens lifestyle is becoming an increasingly popular option for surgeons seeking more control over their work-life balance. At the same time, if you’re a locum tenens surgeon, the transient nature of locum tenens can also have drawbacks that must be weighed carefully before pursuing this path.

    Flexibility and Freedom

The biggest advantage of locum tenens for many surgeons is the flexibility and freedom. Unlike permanent staff surgeon jobs, locums can choose when and where they want to work. This allows work-life balance, extended vacations, and the ability to relocate. Locums can sample practices across the country, avoid workplace politics, and take breaks between assignments. The autonomy and control over schedule is a huge perk.

    Change of Scenery

One of the biggest perks of locum tenens is the constant change of scenery it provides. Unlike being stuck in the same hospital or medical practice for years, locum tenens allows surgeons to experience short-term assignments in a variety of locations and healthcare systems across the country.

This mobility brings the exciting opportunity to explore diverse cities and communities. Surgeons can temporarily live in places they’ve always wanted to visit and tour the area during their downtime. The geographic flexibility means surgeons can take assignments in locations they find interesting or desirable for lifestyle reasons.

Additionally, the change in healthcare settings breaks up the monotony and exposes surgeons to new teams, patient demographics, procedures, and organizational cultures. This variety can stimulate learning opportunities and growth by challenging surgeons to adapt to different environments. Exposing themselves to novel systems gives locums perspective and a platform for comparing and adopting best practices.

    Supplemental Income

Locum tenens offers the chance to make extra income on top of a permanent position. Surgeons might moonlight as a locum for extra cash or to pay off student loans and debts. Some surgeons transition to fully locum roles to earn more money through higher hourly pay rates, overtime, and bonuses. It can increase earnings substantially.

    Drawbacks and Challenges

While locum tenens has advantages, it also has unique stresses and drawbacks. Surgeons should weigh both sides.

    Job Instability

Unlike permanent staff jobs, locum tenens does not provide stable, guaranteed income or benefits. Surgeons must continually seek out their next assignment, which may have gaps in between. There is uncertainty and financial instability. Building a consistent clientele is key.

    Work-Life Imbalance

The flexibility of locums can also create an imbalance. Surgeons may find themselves overworked by juggling multiple locations. Schedules can be unpredictable. Extensive travel can disrupt family life and personal time. Setting boundaries is crucial.

    Professional Isolation

As a temporary outsider, locum surgeons often lack connection and support from permanent staff. They must quickly adapt to new teams, processes, and hospitals. Surgeons can feel professionally isolated without mentors or camaraderie. Networking is essential.

In the end, locum tenens offers surgeons a unique path with advantages like freedom and flexibility as well as challenges like instability and isolation. Locums can find fulfillment while enjoying various temporary positions with the right expectations and boundaries. The lifestyle is a balancing act but can be rewarding.
