Work on the new indoor sports barn at Cefn Hengoed Community School and Leisure Centre is continuing to progress well ahead of its opening in the new year.

The external shell of the building is now complete and work is underway to install the new 3G pitch inside.

It is part of a £7.5m investment that also includes upgrades to the school, leisure centre and a new family engagement centre.

It has been jointly funded by Swansea Council, Welsh Government, the Football Foundation, Freedom Leisure and Sports Wales, and supported by partners including the Swansea City AFC Foundation, the Football Association of Wales, the WRU and of course Cefn Hengoed School.

The new Leisure Centre, operated by Freedom Leisure, one of the UK’s leading not for profit and charitable leisure trusts that manages the leisure facilities in Swansea on behalf of Swansea City Council, will consist of a brand-new gym, a much-improved sports hall and changing facilities .

The new fitness facilities will be open for longer, every day of the week and boast a larger fitness suite and more fitness classes than ever before in a brand-new studio including the likes of Yoga, Step and Functional Fitness enhancing the opportunities for the local community to take part in and see the benefits to their physical and mental health.

Further highlights in the new facility include a new open plan reception area, plus a new café and seating area serving Costa Coffee and an improved range of hot and cold food for the whole community to enjoy.

The indoor sports barn will provide a 3G pitch suitable for football, rugby and a range of other sporting activities for Cefn Hengoed and the wider Swansea community.

Gwyn Owen, Freedom Leisure’s Area Manager, in Swansea said: “Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre is key in supporting the residents of Cefn Hengoed to remain as active and healthy as possible. The new facility will be a fantastic space to encourage a wide range of activities for the whole community across Swansea”.

The developments will allow a range of other activities to be offered including birthday parties, sports courses such as gymnastics, club and team bookings and more.

For further information and details of how to book Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre, email the centre at [email protected] and  you can also follow them on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/cefnhengoedleisurecentre to see all the latest updates relating to this great new facility. Freedom Leisure will also be updating their website which can be found here https://www.freedom-leisure.co.uk/cefnhengoed/

The work is being undertaken by local contractor Morganstone.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration, Events and Tourism, Robert Francis-Davies, said: “The countdown is now well and truly on for the opening of the refurbished and significantly improved leisure centre along with the brand new sports barn.

“It is a very exciting project that will offer top-class leisure and sporting activities to residents in eastside and beyond.”

Cabinet member for Education and learning, Robert Smith, added: “These new sports and community facilities will benefit thousands of pupils at Cefn Hengoed School for many years to come.

“I’d like to thank all our partners in this project for their commitment and vision in turning our initial plans into reality.”
