The owners of two award-winning restaurants in Swansea have been dubbed the ‘Kings of Curry’ after stepping in to spread some festive joy to 85 local children living in poverty.
Suki and Jas Kullar who own Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Pontlliw and Swansea’s SA1 Rasoi Waterfront, were helped by staff to cook and deliver 85 delicious festive takeaways complete with chocolate treats to the Faith in Families community centre in Blaenymaes.
Rasoi loaded up their iconic tuk-tuk with 85 curry and chocolate feasts and travelled to the Teilos Community Cwtch in Blaenymaes to deliver them to each and every child that Faith in Families support. Faith in Families provides essential support to families in some of the most deprived areas of Swansea and supports vulnerable children and families by offering a range of services including practical support and play therapy.
Rasoi Indian Kitchen has a strong track record of giving back to the local community with the brothers getting involved in charity work regularly. Speaking about the Faith in Families partnership, Suki Kullar said: “We heard about the work that Faith in Families do in Swansea and were shocked and saddened to hear about the poverty some children are living in right here in our city, which is only getting worse as the cost of living crisis continues. We are very thankful to all our staff who contributed to making this possible because we really couldn’t have done it without them. And we are so grateful that we are in a position to support some of the most in need in our community.”
Cherrie Bija from Faith in Families said: “Sadly this will be a difficult Christmas for many children living in poverty right here in our city, so we’ve been overwhelmed with the generosity of Suki and Jas to help treat them and put a smile on their faces – they really are the Kings of Curry for us this Christmas!
“The children had an absolute ball, they all devoured the food, even the young babies! Many had never tasted curry before, but they absolutely loved it! The families were thrilled. Thanks to Rasoi for bringing a new experience and a fund afternoon to our children, they really did help make an incredible difference.”
Earlier this week Rasoi also welcomed a group of people who have experienced homelessness or a vulnerable housing for a free festive feast at their SA1 Rasoi Waterfront restaurant. Working with homelessness and rough sleeping charity, The Wallich, Rasoi catered for residents of one of the charity’s hostels in Swansea.
Hugh Bevan, a Senior Support Worker from The Wallich, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Rasoi for opening their doors, and their hearts, to our residents. Seeing the people we support visibly relax and enjoy a warm meal was very heartwarming to see. Thank you Rasoi for joining the community response to homelessness.”
Suki Kullar added: “It really is our pleasure and ethos to give back to our local community and we are so grateful to help two very deserving causes. We hope this helps to raise awareness of the excellent work that is being carried out by Faith in Families and The Wallich and the plight of the people entrenched in poverty in Swansea.”
