New Cardiff food tour offers a “short, sweet and savoury” taste of Welsh cuisine

Sian Roberts, founder of food tours provider Loving Welsh Food, has added a new Cardiff tour to her food tour menu.

The Cardiff Tasting Tour is a leisurely tasting tour taking in some of the city’s finest Welsh delicacies. Unlike the longer food tours offered by Loving Welsh Food, this tour is designed to fit into a morning, giving you time to include other activities in your day.

Treats include traditional Welshcakes from Fabulous Welshcakes, whisky tastings at Wally’s Delicatessen, Clark’s pies at the Market Deli and much more – including a sampling of Welsh cheeses at Ty Caws, whose owner Owen Davies, aka “Owen the Cheese man”, started his cheese career as a buyer for Harvey and Brockless in London. Owen is now a team leader at the World Cheese Awards and an associate member of the Academy of Cheese.

“This is the first time we’ve included Ty Caws in one of our tours and we’re delighted to have them on board,” says Loving Welsh Food founder Sian. “Owen is a true cheese expert, and his selection of Welsh cheeses is second-to-none.

“Combined with the other stops on the tour, you’ll get a true taste of Welsh specialities running from morning tea, coffee and bara brith at Cardiff Castle through to Welsh rarebit with Welsh cider or beer at The Welsh House.”

Sian, who speaks five languages including Welsh, started her career working internationally as a tour guide before returning to Wales and pursuing a long career in TV and radio presenting and production. Along the way, she has found many outlets for her passion for food – including producing Coginio, a two-DVD series on Welsh cooking, which inspired her to found Loving Welsh Food.

The company offers a range of food tour experiences including the City of Arcades tour which explores Cardiff’s cosmopolitan food scene, the Welsh Food Tour – a longer, four-hour tour of Cardiff, and private tours that venture out of the city centre.

While she still works as a BBC radio announcer, she loves nothing more than introducing people to the edible delights of her vibrant home city.

“Cardiff is a perfect city for food tours – not only because of its fascinating food heritage and excellent range of food retailers, but also because all the key attractions are within 15 minutes’ radius of the city centre, making it easy to take in lots of delicious treats without tiring yourself out,” she says. “The new Cardiff tour is a short, sweet and savoury taste of the capital that will leave you with time to fit further activities into your day.”
