Free cyber security support on offer for SMEs

Small businesses looking for support with cyber security are being offered free help from an award-winning university.

The University of South Wales (USW) is looking for SMEs which could benefit from the expertise available through its cyber security programmes.

USW is recognised as a leading provider of cyber security education, having been named Cyber University of the Year at The National Cyber Awards for four years in a row between 2019 and 2022.

In 2020 USW also became the first university in Wales to be named as an Academic Centre of Excellence (ACE) in Cyber Security Education by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – which is part of the Government-run GCHQ. It is now a gold-level ACE.

“USW is committed to strengthening its students’ knowledge, skills, and experiences in cyber security by partnering with small enterprises, enabling them to harness award-winning expertise through the applied learning model of the University’s cyber security programmes,” said Rhys Driscoll, who is USW’s Partner Development and Outreach Lead for Cyber Security.

“We are looking for SMEs to collaborate with to develop academic projects that address an area of interest, research, or opportunity for a business/sector.”

Rhys added that the offer of support could be vital in today’s online environment.

“In a world where cyber threats are constantly evolving, the importance of skilled professionals in cybersecurity cannot be overstated,” Rhys said.

“At USW we have established ourselves as a leader and hub for cybersecurity education and are taking a proactive approach to prepare students for real-world challenges.

“We understand that not all businesses are an Apple or a Google, so exposing our students to a variety of businesses of any size across different sectors can improve their chances of employment and development of skills which are required by the cyber security sector.”
