Pontypridd’s annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service will take place in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park on Sunday 8 November.
The parade starts at 10:35am in the park, where people of all ages from a range of community and military organisations will form up and parade to the War Memorial.
A service led by the Reverend Charlotte Rushton of St Catherine’s Church, Pontypridd, will take place there at 11am. It offers everyone a chance to join in prayer and includes a two-minute silence for reflection and remembrance.
The event commemorates British service members who have died in wars and other military conflicts since the onset of World War I. People from across Rhondda Cynon Taf are invited to come together and pay their respects.
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is holding the event in partnership with Pontypridd Town Council. The council said it is an opportunity to reaffirm its support for all members of the Armed Forces Community, serving and retired.
The council’s Armed Forces Covenant includes a free veterans advice service, a Covenant Grant Fund and information on the free Armed Forces Discount scheme.
The council’s Armed Forces team also regularly assists with war grave cleaning in cemeteries around the county borough, in conjunction with Valleys Veterans and on behalf of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Volunteers are always welcome, and more information is available from Valleys Veterans at www.valleyveterans.org.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Armed Forces Champion, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for us to come together as a community to honour and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. We are proud to hold this annual event in Pontypridd, where residents, veterans, serving personnel, cadets and community groups can unite in reflection, gratitude and respect. I would encourage anyone who is able to attend to join us as we pay tribute to those who gave so much and reaffirm our continued support for members of the Armed Forces community, past and present. Across Rhondda Cynon Taf, local organisations and town and community councils will also be holding services and acts of remembrance, providing further opportunities for people to mark this significant occasion in their own communities.”
