Pembrokeshire County Council has appointed community engagement specialists spacetocreate to work closely with stakeholders, community groups and the public in Haverfordwest to seek views on the redevelopment of Castle Square.

Pedestrian routes and access to the castle and new town centre wayfinding solutions are all central to the Council’s commitment to continue to re-invent and invest in Pembrokeshire’s town centres making them lively, vibrant and thriving places which people enjoy.

The project forms part of the comprehensive engagement and place-making strategy for Haverfordwest Town Centre. This is one of a series of projects currently being delivered within the town and the next phase to connect all interventions in a coordinated manner.

The proposal is to remodel Castle Square as an attractive, safe, accessible, welcoming public space with improved links to the Castle.

Informed by public engagement sessions, the revitalised square will have increased appeal for public events and activities.

Unique town centre signage and digital wayfinding will be developed, enhancing accessibility, particularly to Haverfordwest Castle via the square.

The project will address the safety of all routes and aim to reduce anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

The outcomes will build on and celebrate Haverfordwest’s rich historical importance as a former major trading port and significant mediaeval settlement, increasing a sense of pride in place for locals and visitors and for future generations.

The people of Haverfordwest are invited to help shape the outcomes and ensure that they reflect their hometown.

From Wednesday 24th through to Saturday 27th April, Castle Square will become a hub of activities hosting gardening, games, workshops and music. It will be a welcoming social space where people can share memories, and ideas for the future of the Square and links to the castle.

Rachel Moxey, Head of Economic Development and Regeneration at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: “Castle Square is historically significant, being the last one remaining of four squares that once defined the town centre. The project will breathe new life into the square, retaining its important function as a site for the farmer’s market and other events as well as contributing to the economic revival of our county town.”

A design team will be appointed in May 2024 and concept designs will be shared with the public in June 2024 and construction work will begin Autumn/Winter 2024/25
