This week, four dedicated cyclists departed from Pontypridd Common, embarking on a significant journey to ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Departing from the 5th Welch Memorial Pontypridd, they will cover a distance of 365 miles to reach ‘s-Hertogenbosch, also known as Den Bosch.

The cyclists are set to arrive in Den Bosch on Thursday, in time for the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the city. This event holds deep historical significance, as 146 British soldiers lost their lives in the battle of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and the citizens of Den Bosch have always recognised that they owe their freedom to the troops who fought in the battle over five days.

In 1995, the Pontypridd branch of The Royal Welsh Regimental Association established a meaningful connection with Den Bosch. Since then, members have maintained strong ties with the Dutch city, fostering a lasting bond.

During the ceremony, Gareth Pennell, secretary of the Royal Welsh Regimental Association for Pontypridd lit a lamp containing the symbolic ‘Flame of Freedom.’ The cyclists will carry this flame to the Netherlands, where it will be placed in the city’s cathedral, symbolising the enduring friendship and shared history between the two communities.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf and Armed Forces Champion, said: “We are incredibly proud of these cyclists for undertaking such a meaningful and historically significant journey.

“Their dedication not only honours the memory of the 146 British soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, but also strengthens the close relationship between Pontypridd and Den Bosch.

“This journey symbolises the deep friendship, shared history, and rich culture between our communities, and the ‘Flame of Freedom’ they carry is a powerful reminder of the values we hold dear.”

The cyclists will be joined by over fifty local veterans and members of the Armed Forces community when they reach s-Hertogenbosch on Thursday.

The journey is being carried out by the four cyclists who are self-funding the event. However, some of the equipment needed to complete the journey including hiring a van to support them and carry their kit, is costly. The cyclists are therefore aiming to raise £750 to support this endeavour. There is still time to show your support. Donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/gareth-pennell-2
