Pembrokeshire Archives was delighted to host the Legal Wales Conference 2024 this month, the first time the event has come to west Wales.

Organisers praised the role played by Pembrokeshire County Council and its team in making the event a “huge success.”

Special thanks was given to Legal Services Manager Kelly Byrne for her contribution to the work of the programme committee along with Claire Orr and the team at the Archives for putting on a display of material of legal interest.

The Legal Wales Conference, now in its 21st year, provides a platform for significant contributions to the continuing dialogue on constitutional and legal developments in Wales, and the future shape of the profession.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s Head of Law and Governance, Rhian Young said: “We were excited to welcome so many distinguished legal professionals to Haverfordwest.

“We were also particularly proud of the contributions of two of our team members; Solicitor Sam Pitchford who contributed to a panel discussion on the Celtic Freeport and clerk, Josh Thomas who shared his experiences during a panel on Legal Apprenticeships.”

Headline speakers on the day included The Lady Chief Justice of Wales and England, Rt Hon. Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill DBE, Rt Hon Lord Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,The Counsel General for Wales & Minister for Delivery, Julie James AS/MS and Professor Laura McAllister CBE, Chair of the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales.

Legal Wales Executive Committee Member Huw Williams said: “The feedback has in all respects been positive and the Pembrokeshire Archives proved to be a very suitable and flexible location for the attendance of over 160 delegates.”

Council Leader Cllr Jon Harvey added: “Hosting an event such as this was fantastic for Pembrokeshire and the legal profession in the area. Thanks go to all involved.”

Legal members from Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion joined those from across Wales for the conference, which was followed by an evening event at Tŷ Milford Waterfront.
