Construction work will soon begin to develop the former Bronllwyn Residential Care Home site in Gelli – to create a modern specialist accommodation, that provides care for people with learning disabilities in adulthood and older age.
The Council has appointed Langstone Construction Group as the contractor to deliver the major development, and the construction phase will soon start from Monday, November 18. Cabinet has previously agreed for the scheme to go ahead, and the relevant planning application received full consent last year. The former care home buildings on site were demolished earlier in 2024.
The prominent site at Colwyn Road will be developed into a new specialist care accommodation that includes 14 en-suite rooms with respite provision. These will be built across a lower ground floor, ground floor, and first floor. A courtyard area will be positioned to the west of the building, while the existing car park and access point into the site will be retained in the development.
Among the modern amenities within the building will be a laundry facility, staff restroom, three day rooms, three sensory rooms, a commercial kitchen, toilet areas, nurse station, hairdresser, assisted bathroom and a training room.
Before the main construction phase starts on November 18, residents may notice the contractor accessing the site to conduct survey work, establish its site offices, and install security and safety measures to protect the public and the work area. The overall project is scheduled for completion during 2026.
Minimal overall disruption is expected within the community during the works. Langstone Construction Group has written to the nearby Cylch Meithrin and primary school, to introduce themselves and the project. Construction activity will be very considerate of the everyday operation of these education settings.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “I’m very pleased that work will soon begin to build this new care accommodation in Gelli. This multi-million pound development will provide much-needed specialist care accommodation for people with learning disabilities. It is part of our wider effort and commitment to modernise the care accommodation options that are available for people in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
“In recent years we’ve delivered popular Extra Care housing in Aberaman and Graig, and a third scheme is being built in Porth. Further multi-million pound investment has been committed by Cabinet to provide further care accommodation for older people in Ferndale and Mountain Ash, and a new accommodation dedicated for people with learning disabilities in Church Village.
“The upcoming project in Gelli will start on site from November 18, following the significant demolition and clearance work that has taken place earlier in the year. The Council has now appointed a contractor for the scheme, and residents will begin to see their presence on site for survey and setup work, before the construction phase starts. Officers will work very closely with the contractor to minimise disruption to the community throughout the scheme.”
