Culinary teacher launches artisan sandwich brand at Ffos Caerffili

A new sandwich brand has joined the roster of businesses flourishing at Ffos Caerffili.

Rebecca Goad, known to everyone as Becci, launched her focaccia sandwich brand Bonnie’s at Caerphilly’s container market during the town’s food festival in April. Bonnie’s is one of a collection of new arrivals at Ffos Caerffili including AG Indian Kitchen and The Meadows Wildlife Park.

Since 2019, Becci has worked alongside her business partner Leyli Homayoonfar at the Mexican street food favourite Bab Hause / Bab Hause Mex, which has served the town from a unit at Ffos Caerffili since it opened last year.

Becci said she was impressed by the footfall though Ffos Caerffili, especially during the school holidays and during periods of hot weather, and decided Caerphilly was the best place to test her own new street food venture.

Becci spotted a gap in the market, realising there was space for a fast and high-end takeaway lunch offer for residents and visitors. Family trips to Italy coupled with the rise in social media street food inspired Beccy to create a brand that serves a range of alternative sandwiches.

“At the moment people love the Chicken Caesar,” Becci said. “But I’m always thinking of new fillings and flavours to try. I want to figure out what people want and serve it to them.”

Growing up in Kent, Becci studied nutrition at the Kingston University London, and during that time gained experience working front of house as well as leading food and cocktail classes at Waitrose Cookery School.

Her background in nutrition plays a big part in Bonnie’s food production, every sandwich is made from fresh produce, and the focaccia bread is made from scratch.

“The people and the community are the reason why I set up here,” Becci said.

“Ffos is one of my favourite sites and I’m looking forward to settling in and making something great here.”

Bonnie’s temporary placement at Ffos Caerffili will come to an end on May 2, but Becci is exploring options to extend her time at the container market after a positive launch.
