Swansea Council has drawn up a shortlist of three high-quality bids to run the former beach and watersports café in front of St Helen’s rugby and cricket ground.

Initial business bids submitted in response to a council call for new tenants have been evaluated, resulting in a field of 14 being reduced to the best three.

The remaining bidders have now provided extra detail about their ambitions for the venue – and the council will select the best option in the coming weeks.

The seafront location – previously known as the 360 – temporarily closed on September 5 when operator Bay Sports decided to end their tenancy. The toilets remain open, managed by the council.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for innovation, regeneration and tourism, said:

“The three best bids show great ambition for the venue and an understanding of what will work best for local residents and visitors.

“We are delighted by the interest we have had as we work to secure a top quality new tenant. I thank every bidder.

“We’re confident the venue will be let in the coming months; we will keep the public fully informed as we progress towards the relaunch.”

The company that takes on the lease will enjoy a business opportunity in a spectacular location. The lease was formally advertised this summer on behalf of the council that owns the licensed premises.

Cllr Francis-Davies said: “The process will ensure that our new tenants will provide an exceptional public service to match the environment.

“With a vast expanse of sandy beach and Mumbles Head nearby, this location has probably the best views of any commercial property in Wales.”

Activities the venue is licensed to host include film, music and dance. The use of the beach for sport, physical activity and recreation is also available by licence.
