One of Cardiff’s oldest cherished primary schools, Adamsdown Primary School, has celebrated a remarkable milestone this month – 150 years of education, community, and history. First opening its doors to pupils in 1875, the school continues to thrive at the heart of the Adamsdown community.
To mark this significant anniversary, a special celebration has been held, with a range of exciting events to honour the school’s past, present, and future.
At the heart of the celebration was the unveiling of a new mural, designed by pupils and brought to life by Wall-Op, a Cardiff-based mural artist collective known for their work in community collaboration. The mural reflects the vibrancy, diversity, and heritage of Adamsdown, and stands as a lasting tribute to the school’s 150-year legacy.
The mural was officially unveiled by former Welsh international footballer Joe Ledley, a proud Cardiff native and other guests to the event included former members of staff and representatives from many of the local religious establishments in the area.
Throughout the week leading up to the event, pupils delved into Cardiff’s Victorian history, exploring what life was like when the school first opened and on the day of the celebration, they hosted guests in a Victorian-themed tearoom, offering a charming glimpse into the past.
The day also included a Community Fayre, showcasing the school’s valued partnerships with local organisations and visitors enjoyed activities and performances from Rubicon Dance, Upbeat Music, NoFit State Circus, Oasis One World Choir,Seren in the Community,Railway Gardens, Wales Restorative Approaches Partnership, Cardiff City Football Club andMorgan Sindall, the contractors chosen to build the new Willows high.
Headteacher at the school, Emma Thomas said: “Adamsdown Primary School has enjoyed celebrating this significant milestone as a whole school. We are extremely grateful to all our community links for their help and support to make this week such a special time for our pupils. We hope the school and community enjoy the new school mural for many years to come!”
Cardiff’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “Adamsdown Primary School is one of the city’s oldest schools and its 150thanniversary is a unique milestone in Cardiff’s educational story.
“The celebrations have provided a chance to acknowledge the generations of pupils, staff, families and the local community who have helped shape the school as it is today and the new mural will be a reminder of this long into the future – Congratulations.”
