Caerphilly County Borough Council is pleased to announce the official opening of a brand new dual use 3G all-weather pitch at Risca School and Leisure Centre, funded by the Welsh Government’s Community Focused Schools capital grant programme.

The development represents a significant investment in local sporting infrastructure and supports both the Council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019–2029 and wider Place Shaping ambitions. Situated on a education and community campus, the new facility will benefit pupils at Risca Community Comprehensive School during the day and serve the wider community during evenings and weekends.

Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said:

“This development reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible facilities that support both education and lifelong participation in sport. The 3G pitch enhances our ability to deliver the aims of the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, ensuring that more people can enjoy the benefits of physical activity close to home.”

The floodlit pitch has replaced the previous AstroTurf surface and provides a modern, durable, and inclusive space suitable for a range of sports including football and rugby. With an artificial surface designed to withstand high usage throughout the year, it will support a wide variety of activities for schools, local clubs, and community groups.

Councillor Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education and Communities, commented:

“This facility is an excellent example of how we can maximise the use of school sites for the benefit of both learners and the wider community. It is a clear demonstration of our Place Shaping principles in action, creating shared spaces that improve education, health and community wellbeing.”
