Redevelopment work is progressing on of the old Marks & Spencer site in Pontypridd town centre. Since construction began earlier this year, the site at 97-102 Taff Street has been steadily taking shape.
The area is being turned into a brand-new Riverside Plaza, a welcoming public space with greenery, small food and drink kiosks, and open views of the River Taff, which haven’t been seen from the town in over 100 years. It will also be a flexible space that can host local events and bring more life to the town centre.
This project is part of the Pontypridd Placemaking Plan, which is all about improving the town for residents, businesses, and visitors. Grant funding has been secured to progress the project, alongside support from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
What’s Been Done So Far (as of July 2025):
- Temporary supports used during demolition have been removed.
- New boundary walls have been built on the west side of the site.
- The flood wall along the River Taff has been strengthened with reinforced concrete.
- The top level of the steel structure and its concrete deck are finished.
- Work on the middle level is halfway done.
What’s Coming Next:
- Finish the middle level of the structure.
- Build new steps and a ramp to make the area more accessible.
- Install new drainage systems.
- Finalise the layout, including planting trees and greenery.

“Positive progress has been made since February. The upper level of the new plaza is already taking shape, and we’re on track thanks to the work of our contractor, Horan Construction Ltd.
“This project is a key part of the Council’s wider plans to regenerate Pontypridd. With support from both the Welsh and UK Governments, we’ve already delivered major improvements like Llys Cadwyn, the Cwrt yr Orsaf housing scheme, Y Muni, and upgrades to Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
“The new plaza will complement the nearby former Bingo Hall site, creating a bright, open space with food kiosks, greenery, and lovely views across the park. It’ll also be a great spot for events and gatherings.
“We’re working closely with our contractor to keep things moving smoothly and to minimise disruption for residents and businesses.”
What the New Plaza Will Offer:
- A key link between the train station, the town centre, and Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
- Beautiful views of the river and park.
- Green spaces with trees, plants, and eco-friendly drainage.
- A flexible space for events and community use.
- Small kiosks selling food and drinks.
- Most of the site will be raised to reduce flood risk.
- Improvements to the lane leading to the park (which remains open and is being monitored for safety).
