As part of its drive to create a sustainable and healthier society through developing a more equitable and nourishing food system, the Bridgend Sustainable Food Partnership has arranged a series of free cooking sessions in communities across the county borough.

The six-week courses have stemmed from the partnership’s food summit and community engagement work, with the classes reaching out to areas of the local community in a bid to develop cooking skills, sharpen nutritional understanding, and elevate self-esteem.

The first series of sessions were hosted by Tanio, a community arts charity, based at Betws, and at Bethlehem Church Life Centre, Cefn Cribwr.

“The cooking sessions offered our participants a fantastic opportunity to develop their culinary skills in a fun, informal setting. These engaging sessions not only provided valuable nutritional guidance but also significantly boosted attendees’ wellbeing, sense of connection and confidence. Every session was thoroughly enjoyed, and we’re truly grateful for the experience”.

Sharly Lewis, Programme Manager at Tanio

The classes were led by Jen Davis from Cooking Together Wales, an organisation run by qualified food technology teachers equipped with a wealth of experience, as well as a passion for teaching nutrition and cooking skills.

“The cooking workshops for adults at Tanio included many elements that are encompassed in preparing food. For example, trying new ingredients, learning new recipes and styles of cooking, as well as looking at how to eat more sustainably and organically. Most importantly, the workshops focused on cooking for a family – preparing easy, nutritious meals on a budget, whilst making new friends”.

“What an amazing initiative – offering free cooking workshops within local communities to ensure accessibility for all. So much can be gained from these courses – self-esteem, life skills, connection and more. “We have had a wonderful response to the first series of workshops and I’m sure that we will continue to build on this success in the future sessions that have been planned. “I am looking forward to seeing these workshops becoming embedded within in our communities, equipping our residents with the skills to empower them”.

Cllr Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services

The first course of sessions ended in June, with further classes set to begin in September.  If you would like further information about the programme, please contact [email protected].
