The third phase of a major drainage improvement scheme in Mountain Ash will get underway this week, with work focusing on High Street and Cliff Street.

The scheme, jointly funded by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Welsh Government, will start on Monday, 11 August as part of a wider project to strengthen the town’s drainage network and reduce flood risk.

This phase will see a section of twin pipes at the junction of Cliff Street and High Street replaced with a larger single pipe to improve capacity. Pipe re-lining will also be carried out on High Street.

    Road closures and traffic management

To allow the work to be completed safely, Cliff Street will close from its junction with High Street for around five days, between 8am and 5pm daily.

    • Alternative route (west side of closure): Eva Street → Beadon Street → Quarry Cottages → Quarry Road → High Street

    • Alternative route (east side of closure): Graig Street → Woodland Street → Quarry Cottages → Beadon Street → Eva Street → Cliff Street

Temporary one-way systems will also be in place on sections of Quarry Road, Woodland Street and Park Hill, along with temporary no-stopping restrictions on parts of Quarry Road, Quarry Cottages, Beadon Street, High Street and Woodland Street. Full details and maps are available on the Council’s website.

The work will be carried out by the RCT Streetcare Team with support from sub-contractor Arch Services Ltd.

Part of a wider £500k investment

This latest stage follows earlier phases in 2024 and 2025 across streets including Victor Street, Stream Street, Pryce Street and Eva Street.

The overall scheme is being delivered through the Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management programme, with the Council providing 15% match funding — representing a total investment of over £500,000.

The Council has thanked residents and businesses for their cooperation during the works.
