Orbis Education and Care’s Lucy Pottinger will fly the flag for Wales at a national ceremony this month as the only Welsh nominee shortlisted for a Variety Catherine Award.

Lucy has been nominated for the Rising Star Award at this year’s event, which celebrates inspiring women from the worlds of business and philanthropy UK wide.

As Director of Education at Orbis, Lucy is also the only individual working in the education and care sector shortlisted for the category, which shines a spotlight on ‘women to watch’ for the future.

Fellow nominees for the awards include Olympic ice skater Jayne Torvill OBE, beauty brand founder Charlotte Tilbury and the woman behind online fashion giant Net-A-Porter, Dame Natalie Sara Massenet.

    Lucy said:

“I’m absolutely over the moon to have been shortlisted for these awards alongside so many incredible women, most of whom are doing amazing things not just in their respective fields but on a national level.

“To be aligned with individuals of their calibre and representing not just the education and care sector but Wales as a whole in these awards too, is an absolute honour and a privilege.”

Founded in 2016 by the children’s charity Variety, the Catherine Awards recognise the myriad contributions from women in business and philanthropy while raising awareness and funds for disabled and disadvantaged children throughout the UK.

Open to women who are making a difference in their chosen field, Lucy joins a host of nominees working across finance, food, digital and various other industries in the Rising Star category.

Winners in all sections will be announced at the London Marriott Hotel in London on November 13th, following adjudication from a panel of judges that included Paula Radcliffe MBE, Barclays Private Bank CEO Lisa Francis and various others.

Mike Currier, CEO of Orbis Education and Care, said:

“We could not be more delighted for Lucy in light of this nomination, and cannot put into words how rightfully received it is.

“Lucy became an Estyn Peer Inspector aged just 29 and Orbis’ Director of Education the following year, aged 30. She has dedicated her working life to children and young adults who have Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and has spearheaded Orbis’ pioneering adult day services for those with ASD, where people are at the centre of their own development pathway and get to experience real work experience at our Orb centres in Porth and Morriston.”
