This will be the first time the Tour has visited Newport since 2018, when the city hosted the finish to the opening stage, won by André Greipel.
The Tour will be the final race for Geraint Thomas, before he retires from the sport following a long and distinguished career.
Route information
The final stage, on Sunday 7 September, will start at 11.45am the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, before heading into the city centre, up Stow Hill past Newport Cathedral, and out along Bassaleg Road towards Pye Corner and High Cross.
The race will then head up Chartist Drive and Risca Road, where it will head into Caerphilly county.
It will then head up the valleys towards Pontllanfraith and Blackwood, then onto Ebbw Vale and Tredegar, turning back north at Markham towards Rhymney, before heading down through Bargoed, Ystrad Mynach and Caerphilly town towards the finish line in Cardiff.
If you are interested in coming out to support the race, there will be plenty of good spectator points along the way.
A series of rolling road closures will be in place along the entire length of the route throughout the race. These are expected to last around half an hour in each location, to allow the race to pass through safely.
If you live on the route, you should have been contacted directly by the race organisers about these closures.
There are two stretches of the route through Newport which have been designated as clearways. This means that no parking will be allowed in these stretches until the race has passed through them.
The two stretches are:
- Along Stow Hill, around Newport Cathedral, and
- Along Risca Road, from the Pontnewydd roundabout to the junction with Caerphilly county.
At the start line
Stage six will start at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales.
Wales’s national velodrome opened in 2003 and has played host to the British National Track Championships, as well as the British track cycling team’s pre-event holding camps ahead of the last five summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The velodrome was renamed after Geraint Thomas in 2018, following his victory at that year’s Tour de France.
Team presentations will be taking place inside the Geraint Thomas Velodrome prior to the race departing.
