Resurfacing work at Malpas Road in Newport is set to begin on Friday 13 February as part of the council’s major road improvement programme.

The scheme forms part of a wider £6.6m investment in maintaining and improving some of the city’s most critical roads, which has been underway since last summer. The council said the work at Malpas Road is a key element of the programme due to the road’s importance within the local network.

Newport Council explained that planning the resurfacing has been particularly complex. This is due to the road’s location and the large number of utility pipes and cables running beneath the surface.

In addition, the council was informed last month that one of the utility pipes requires maintenance work. This has now been built into the programme to avoid further disruption after the resurfacing is complete.

Here’s what you need to know about the work.

    Timeline

The work will be split into a number of phases.

Phase 1 – Barrack Hill footbridge to Goodrich Crescent junction

    8pm, Friday 13 February to 5am, Monday 16 February.

    8pm, Friday 20 February to 5am, Monday 23 February.

During these times, the road will be fully closed to all through traffic from Harlequin Roundabout to the M4 junction 26 roundabout. Pedestrian access will remain available at all times.

Resident access to Goodrich Crescent and the Brynglas area will be facilitated as much as possible, but but won’t be possible in the immediate vicinity of the work.

Utilities works – 23 February to 3 April

During this period, Wales & West Utilities will be carrying out maintenance work on their gas pipes on Malpas Road, in between the two junctions of Goodrich Crescent.

They will be carrying out work during the week, from Monday to Friday. Hours of work will be restricted to between 9.30am-3.30pm.

Lane closures will be used during this period, with temporary traffic lights in place to control traffic.

Phase 2 – Goodrich Crescent junction to 77 Malpas Road (approx.)

Dates to be confirmed. Times and information as Phase 1 above.

    Phases 3 and 4 – 77 Malpas Road (approx.) to M4 junction 26

Dates to be confirmed. Times and information as Phase 1 above.

Dates for phases 2, 3 and 4 will be published by the council as soon as they are confirmed.

Note – all timings are provisional and subject to change in the event of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.
