A nationwide search is underway for 9,000 volunteers to be at the heart of the historic Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift Grand Départs in the UK in July 2027.
Around 1,000 volunteers will be needed in Wales for the third stage of the men’s race on 4 July. The stage starts in Welshpool, passes through iconic landscapes, scenic valleys and bustling town centres, before finishing in Cardiff.
Applications are now open and close on 1 September 2026.
Anyone aged 16 and over is encouraged to apply – no prior experience is needed and full training is provided. Those aged 18 to 25 will also be eligible for the Readiness to Work scheme, offering employability skills training and career-focused mentoring.
Officially known as JOY Makers, volunteers will help to ensure these iconic events run seamlessly, bringing the joy of cycling to fans and communities across all six stages. A range of roles are available across both tours to support event operations and enhance the spectator experience.
The Welsh Government will work with the Wales Council for Voluntary Action to ensure volunteering for the Tour can open doors to further opportunities across Wales.
Commenting on the launch of the application portal, Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport, Heledd Fychan said:
“The Tour de France coming to Wales is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s our chance to build on the legacy of Geraint Thomas, inspire a new generation to get on their bikes, and show the world the very best of Wales.
“As a volunteer, you’ll help Wales share its unique ‘Croeso’ while being part of a history-making event, meeting new people, celebrating your community and developing skills to boost your employability.
“Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or completely new, everyone is welcome. I encourage anyone interested to represent their community through the Grand Départs.”
Regular volunteer at cycling events, Mavis Evans from Flintshire added:
“I volunteered as a crossing point in 2014 when the Tour de France last came to the UK, and it was an incredibly special experience. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about the Tour returning to home soil. If you’re thinking about volunteering, my advice would be to just do it. Events can’t run without volunteers – your help genuinely makes a difference.”
