Wales braced for heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms this weekend

People across Wales can expect a mixed weekend of sunshine, heavy rain and the risk of thunderstorms, according to the latest forecast.

Friday will bring a combination of sunny spells and scattered showers, although most areas are expected to stay dry for much of the day. Any showers that do develop are likely to be lighter than those seen earlier this week, although an isolated heavy downpour cannot be ruled out.

With light winds and temperatures reaching around 17°C, conditions should feel pleasant in any sunshine.

However, the weather is set to take a turn later on Friday evening as a band of rain moves in from the southwest. The rain is expected to become particularly heavy overnight, accompanied by strengthening winds. Gale-force gusts are possible in some areas before conditions begin to improve from the west towards dawn. Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall to around 7°C.

Saturday will start on a wet and windy note across much of Wales, with rain gradually clearing during the morning. Brighter conditions are expected to develop through the afternoon, bringing a mix of sunshine and showers.

Some of these showers could become heavy and thundery, particularly across eastern parts of Wales, where hail is also possible. Temperatures will again peak at around 17°C.

Sunday is expected to provide the best weather of the weekend, with a bright start and some sunshine. Cloud will gradually build through the day, however, with rain moving in overnight into Monday.

The unsettled theme looks set to continue into next week. Rain is expected to slowly clear on Monday, giving way to brighter spells later in the day, while Tuesday will bring a mix of sunshine and showers alongside temperatures close to the seasonal average.

Anyone planning outdoor activities this weekend is advised to keep an eye on local forecasts, particularly on Saturday when heavy showers, hail and isolated thunderstorms could develop.
