The Development Bank of Wales has provided a £180,000 Green Business Loan to JJP Services Ltd to support a major on-site renewable energy investment at its headquarters in Llanidloes.

The new funding will enable the electrical services business to install a 100kWp solar PV array with battery storage, significantly reducing its reliance on grid electricity while supporting its net zero ambitions.

Founded and led by sole director Mike Prior, JJP Services employs 18 full-time and two part-time staff and has more than 20 years’ experience delivering electrical installation and project management services across Wales. The business previously secured £150,000 funding from the Development Bank in September 2022.

The £180,000 investment, provided through the Development Bank’s Green Business Loan Scheme, will fund the installation of a 100.125kW solar PV system supported by 215kWh of battery storage at the company’s office premises. The project also includes the installation of ten 22kW electric vehicle charging points to support the transition of its vehicle fleet to electric, alongside the replacement of a defective biomass boiler with a new zero-emission, higher-efficiency boiler.

These improvements are expected to significantly reduce the business’ carbon emissions, cut long-term energy costs and improve its energy resilience by lowering dependence on grid electricity. The investment supports JJP Services’ progress towards its net zero commitment by 2030, and future growth plans aimed at taking on larger-scale developments.

Mike Prior, Founder and Managing Director of JJP Services Ltd, said:
“This investment is a major step forward in how we power our business. Installing on-site solar generation, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure will significantly reduce our reliance on grid electricity while helping us manage long-term energy costs.

“Support from the Development Bank through their Green Business Loan Scheme has enabled us to bring these plans forward, accelerate our move towards net zero by 2030 and invest in sustainable infrastructure that supports the future of the business. We couldn’t have achieved this without their support”

Andrea Richardson, Senior Portfolio Executive at the Development Bank of Wales, said:
“Supporting JJP Services with this green investment allows the business to take a significant step towards a more sustainable, low-carbon operating model.

“By investing in on-site solar generation, battery storage and electric vehicle infrastructure, the company is strengthening its long-term energy efficiency while aligning with its net zero ambitions.”

The Green Business Loan Scheme offers discounted interest rates and patient capital to support businesses undertaking energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects in Wales. Loans from £1,000 to £1.5m are available along with access to fully and part-funded consultancy support to carry out business specific energy audits.
