Residents can now find out more about the Council’s exciting investment proposals for Ysgol Llanhari, which would deliver a brand new school building and first-class supporting spaces, including new outdoor sports facilities.
The project is being delivered as part of a £414 million funding commitment with Welsh Government, which will see many new school investments being progressed in Rhondda Cynon Taf over the years ahead. The project would be delivered via the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
The proposals involve the construction of a new all-through 3-19 Welsh Medium school on the existing site, plus a Welsh language Meithrin. All existing buildings will be demolished. The facilities will include a new floodlit 3G sports pitch, Multi Use Games Areas, car and coach parking, a drop-off/pick-up area, and other supporting facilities and spaces.
The Council has now appointed consultant Asbri Planning to undertake a Pre Application Consultation with the public, up until July 1. This exercise gives residents the opportunity to find out more about the initial proposals and view key documents, including detailed plans and artist’s impression images.

All feedback from residents received over the weeks ahead will be considered by officers, and will help shape the Council’s final planning application which will be submitted in the months ahead. Comments can be made via email or post, with full details included on the Asbri Planning website link above.
As a part of the consultation exercise, there will also be a public exhibition event at Ysgol Llanhari, taking place on Thursday, June 18 (3.30pm-6pm). It will include a new school building and excellent sports facilities for the community, and will be built in accordance with the Council’s commitments in relation to climate change. It’s fantastic to see the first artist’s impression images of the new site, which really bring it to life.
“In partnership with Welsh Government, the Council continues to provide new school facilities in communities right across the County Borough, for the benefit of pupils, staff and local residents. In 2024/25, we delivered seven new schools across Greater Pontypridd, Church Village, Pontyclun, Llantrisant and Ferndale – which have brought new opportunities for our young people every day. Now, we’re focusing on the next round of investment, with new schools in Glyn-coch and Clydach Vale being delivered in 2026/27, and projects being developed for Penrhys, Aberdare, Cymer and Ynysybwl, alongside Llanhari.
“I’d urge interested residents to have their say on the Ysgol Llanhari proposals by July 1, so their views can be considered in the formal planning submission. This can be done online, or at the face-to-face event being organised at the school for June 18, with the project team on hand to answer any questions.”
