Skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users are already making the most of three new wheeled sports facilities that have recently opened in Swansea.
The new street plaza-style facility at Victoria Park, along with upgraded skate parks at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill and Mynydd Newydd in Penlan, mark another major milestone in Swansea Council’s £3 million investment in skateboarding and wheeled sports across the city.
Designed in partnership with specialist company Curve Studio and delivered by experienced contractors Wheelscape, Bendcrete Leisure and Canvas Spaces, the facilities provide modern, inclusive spaces for people of all ages and abilities.
Official openings will follow later this summer.
The investment aims to ensure that most Swansea residents are within two miles of a new or upgraded wheeled sports facility.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “It’s fantastic to see these new facilities open and already being enjoyed by so many people.
“This investment is about creating welcoming, high-quality places where people of all ages can be active, develop skills and enjoy modern facilities close to home.
“We’ve worked closely with local communities and Curve Studio to make sure these facilities reflect what users wanted, and the popularity of the new sites shows the value of that approach.
“These are further important steps in building a city-wide network of skate, BMX and wheeled sports facilities that will serve Swansea residents for many years to come.”
The newly-opened facilities build on major upgrades already completed at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and Melin Mynach in Gorseinon.
Further projects are also planned, including a BMX-focused facility at the Elba sports complex in Gowerton, a small cycling facility in Blaenymaes, a new pump track in Bishopston, refurbishment of the existing pump track at Clyne Valley, a junior pump track in Gorseinon, and a skate park at Ynystawe Park.
Other recently announced schemes set to benefit from the programme include:
- A dirt track and jumps at Coed Gwilym Park in Clydach
- A dirt track at Coed Bach Park in Pontarddulais
- A pump track at Morriston Park
- A pump track at Heol Las Park in Birchgrove
- A pump track at Maesteg Park in St Thomas
- A pump track at the SA1 Prince of Wales Dock that will form part of a new open green space designed for a range of leisure activities
The overall investment is part of the council’s vision to create more vibrant neighbourhoods in Swansea, giving people access to high-quality outdoor facilities.
