Work on a major scheme to improve drainage and reduce the risk of surface flooding along Rhymney High Street is scheduled to begin next week.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has appointed Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Limited to carry out the project.

Work is due to start on Monday 17 August and is expected to take around 10 weeks to complete.

Rhymney is currently among the top 5% of communities most at risk of surface flooding in Wales.

The scheme will provide the High Street with a modern drainage system designed to cope better with increasingly intense storms and unpredictable weather caused by climate change. It will also improve the local street scene.

Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said, “Residents and businesses in Rhymney will no doubt welcome the start of these much-needed works to improve drainage and prevent flooding along the High Street in future. We recognise the disruption and damage that flooding can cause and this scheme demonstrates our commitment to delivering key strategic improvements across the whole county borough.”

The council and contractor will work together to keep disruption to residents and businesses to a minimum.

No road closures are expected during the project. Any diversions required while the footway is relaid will be carefully managed.

The project forms part of the council’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and is being funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
