Residents are being invited to view plans and have their say on the proposed new build for Swansea’s Ysgol Calon Lân special school.
The project has reached another key milestone with the launch of a statutory pre-application consultation for the proposed development on land south of Mynydd Garnllwyd Road, Morriston.
This follows a cabinet decision in July to publish notice of the council’s intention to appropriate land for the new build.
The new state-of-the-art facility will replace Ysgol Calon Lân’s existing sites, bringing pupils together in one place and significantly expanding specialist provision for children and young people with additional learning needs.
People can view the proposals online and submit comments as part of the consultation process.
Two public engagement events are also being held, giving residents the opportunity to meet the project team, ask questions and see the plans in person.
The events will take place:
- Tuesday 8 September, 12pm to 6pm, at Clase Community Centre, Longview Road, Clase.
- Wednesday 16 September, 12pm to 6pm, at Y Storfa, Oxford Street, Swansea city centre.
Consultation documents are available online and comments can be submitted until 24 September.
Cabinet Member for Education, Robert Smith, said: “We’re continuing to make good progress on what is the largest ever investment in special school facilities in Swansea.
“The new build will provide modern, purpose-built facilities that will help meet growing demand for specialist education places and give our children and young people the best possible environment to learn, develop and thrive.
“The project team has worked very closely with the school’s governing body, teachers, learners and their families as the plans have taken shape.
“As well as improving facilities it will create an additional 100 places for learners with additional needs meaning they can receive the specialist support they require closer to their homes.
“I would encourage residents, parents, carers and anyone with an interest in the project to take a look at the proposals and share their views. Community feedback is an important part of the process and will help inform the plans as they move forward.”
The proposed new school build is being developed by Swansea Council with contractor Morgan Sindall, consultants WSP, and will be part funded by the Welsh Government.
It will feature specialist teaching facilities, including sensory rooms, therapy spaces, therapeutic outdoor learning environments and a hydrotherapy pool.
