A well-known Swansea artwork inspired by the poetry of Dylan Thomas taking shape at its new home at Cwmdonkin Park.

The Leaf Boat sculpture – previously located in the city centre’s Castle Square – is being installed in the popular Uplands park, strengthening its connection to the city’s most celebrated literary figure.

Cwmdonkin Park has a strong association with Thomas, who spent his childhood nearby and was inspired by the park in his writing. making it a fitting location for a sculpture influenced by his work.

Elliott King, council cabinet member for culture, human rights and equalities, said:

“The Leaf Boat sculpture was the centrepiece of the former Castle Gardens and became a well-known landmark for residents and visitors.

“Now it’s taking pride of place in Cwmdonkin Park. In a way it’s a homecoming for because it was inspired by Dylan’s work and now it’s in the park that he knew and loved.

“For the many thousands of Dylan fans who walk in his footsteps in the park every year, the Leaf Boat will resonate with them as a further reason to drop by.”

He added: “We’re delighted that it’ll be in a highly visible location, in an attractive setting for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The artwork is being installed within an existing pond area close to Park Drive following discussions with its sculptor Amber Hiscott, as well as others, in considering the future of the piece.

The artist has been involved throughout discussions and supports the relocation, with her work set to be recognised on-site through new interpretation.

The move forms part of wider efforts to enhance Swansea’s cultural and heritage appeal, while ensuring an important public artwork remains accessible and well cared for in the long term.

The relocation follows ongoing work to transform Castle Square, where improvements are progressing to create a high-quality, modern public space in the heart of the city centre.

Once installation is complete, the glass and steel Leaf Boat sculpture that dates back to the mid-1990s will be freely available for all to see in its new setting, helping to celebrate Swansea’s artistic and literary heritage for years to come.
