Cardiff Council is expanding its School Streets scheme this September with two new locations intended to create safer, less congested routes to school.
School Streets close areas around school entrances to general traffic at peak drop-off and pick-up times on school days in term time.
The new sites are:
- Mona Place, serving St Alban’s RC Primary School, operating between 8:10am and 9:10am and 2:30pm and 3:15pm.
- Doyle Avenue and surrounding streets (Heol Dennant, Perrots Close, Milton Place, McCale Avenue, Cadwgan Place), serving Fairwater Community Campus — home to Woodlands High School, Riverbank School and Cantonian High School — operating between 8:45am and 9:30am and 2:30pm and 3:45pm.
The scheme aims to encourage walking, wheeling and cycling to school while reducing the impact of traffic on local communities. Restrictions will be enforced using cameras. Only authorised permit holders, including residents, eligible carers and Blue Badge holders, will be able to access the streets during operating times.
Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: “We want every child in Cardiff to be able to travel to school safely and confidently. School Streets are helping to create calmer, healthier environments outside our schools and are encouraging more families to consider active ways of travelling to and from school.
“The expansion of the scheme to these new locations reflects our commitment to improving safety for pupils and supporting their wellbeing, while also making a positive difference to local communities.”
Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning and Transport, Cllr Dan De’Ath, said: “School Streets have proven to be an effective way of reducing congestion and improving road safety around schools at the busiest times of the day. By limiting through traffic during drop-off and pick-up periods, we can create safer streets for children, parents and local residents.
“Since the scheme was first introduced, we’ve seen positive feedback from schools and communities. These new School Streets will build on that success, helping us support active travel, improve air quality and make Cardiff’s streets safer for everyone.”
First piloted in January 2020, Cardiff’s School Streets programme now includes 20 School Street schemes supporting 24 schools across the city.
