Swansea Council is to upgrade and widen a further section of National Cycle Network 4 (NCN4) between Dunvant and Gowerton after securing £500,000 through the Welsh Government Regional Transport Fund.
The work follows earlier widening and resurfacing on NCN4 between Blackpill and Dunvant on the Clyne Valley route.
The latest investment will support improvements along a 1.75km stretch, creating a wider shared-use path for people who walk, wheel or cycle.
Sections of the route will need to be temporarily closed while the work is carried out. The council is asking users to follow local signage and plan ahead during construction.
NCN4 links communities including Gowerton, Dunvant, Killay and Blackpill and provides onward connections towards Mumbles, Swansea city centre and neighbouring areas.
The council said the upgrade will give pedestrians, cyclists and those using mobility aids more room to pass each other, reducing congestion for commuters, families, leisure users and visitors.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “This is another important investment in Swansea’s active travel network and will build on the improvements already delivered between Blackpill and Dunvant.
“The Dunvant to Gowerton section is well used by people travelling between local communities, whether they are commuting, getting to school, visiting local facilities or enjoying the route for leisure.
“By widening the path we can make it more comfortable, accessible and attractive for all users, giving people more space and helping to support safer journeys on foot, by bike and by other active travel means.
“We appreciate that temporary closures will cause some disruption while the work is taking place, but these are needed to allow the improvements to be delivered safely. We will keep disruption to a minimum and make sure clear information is available for route users.”
The Welsh Government’s Regional Transport Fund supports transport investment across Wales, with a focus on walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport improvements.
