Plans to extend passenger rail services from Aberdare to Hirwaun, including the possibility of two new railway stations, have been put forward for public consultation.

Transport for Wales (TfW), working in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, has launched a public engagement exercise to gather views on proposals that could improve transport connections across the Upper Cynon Valley.

The scheme forms part of the future expansion of the South Wales Metro, as outlined in TfW’s Today, Tomorrow, Together vision for rail across Wales and Borders.

If progressed, the project could see passenger trains return to the existing, unused railway corridor between Aberdare and Hirwaun, providing improved connections to Pontypridd and Cardiff.

Among the proposals being explored are new railway stations at Llwydcoed and Hirwaun, alongside improvements to walking, wheeling and cycling routes and better links with other public transport services.

TfW says the extension could make it easier for residents to access jobs, healthcare and education, while encouraging more sustainable travel.

Although discussions remain at an early stage, initial studies have already been carried out as part of the South Wales Metro programme.

Public engagement opened on 12 October and will run until 22 November 2026, giving residents, businesses and other stakeholders the opportunity to share their views on the proposals.

Rob Jones, Strategic Development Programme Manager at TfW, said: “This engagement is an important opportunity for local communities to help shape proposals that have the potential to transform connectivity across the Upper Cynon Valley.

“Improving access to jobs, education and healthcare can make a real difference to people’s lives, and we want to ensure local knowledge and local priorities help inform the next stage of development.

“Whether you support the proposals, have questions or concerns, or simply want to share your views, we’d encourage everyone to get involved and have their say.”

Feedback collected during the engagement period will help inform future design work and the development of a business case for the scheme.

TfW is encouraging anyone with an interest in the proposals to take part, whether they support the plans or have questions or concerns about the potential extension.
