Dogs take the lead to raise vital funds for Cardiff hospice

Hundreds of dogs and their owners are set to embark on a 5k walk around one of the city’s most popular outdoor spots later this month to raise money for City Hospice (formerly George Thomas Hospice Care).

The Wag this Way walk, which will take place at 11am on Sunday 24 March, has been organised by City Hospice. The event is being held to raise money to fund the vital specialist palliative care they provide to patients with life-limiting illnesses across Cardiff. The Whitchurch-based centre provides medical, nursing and end-of-life care to people in their own homes as well as providing support to families.

The event costs £5 per person to enter and that includes entry for up to two dogs. Upon registering, entrants will receive an event pack which includes a sponsor form to collect donations. Four-legged participants will also receive a City Hospice certificate, a bandana and a goodie bag containing pet food and dog-themed treats inside a Limited Edition illustrated tote bag, courtesy of Burns Pet Nutrition. The event will be captured by local photographer, Thomas Harper, who specialises in dog photography.

Burns Pet Nutrition is one of three companies sponsoring the charity event. The Kidwelly-based natural pet food manufacturer donates a quarter of its profits to charity and this year the family run company will be feeding thousands of rescue animals as part of its Charity of the Year scheme. Nutritionists from Burns Pet Nutrition will be on hand at the event to talk to dog owners about pet health and doggy diet advice.

Other event sponsors include Health Vets, which has surgeries in Rhiwbina, Heath, Cyncoed and Danescourt, and Dog Furiendly – a website that hosts information about dog friendly cafes, restaurants, shops and attractions across Wales.

City Hospice is still looking for volunteers to support the Wag this Way event, particularly martials to help guide participants along the route. Anyone interested in volunteering for the charity walk or exploring other volunteering opportunities with City Hospice should email: [email protected].

To book a place on the Wag this Wag walk, visit https://www.cityhospice.org.uk/event/wag-this-way. The Wag this Way walk takes place on Sunday 24 March at 11am and participants are to meet at Bute Park, Coopers Field.
