Swansea High Street Traders, the organisers of Swansea High Street’s car boot sale, presented £2,000 to the Lord Mayor for his charity fund last weekend.
[aoa id=”1″]The Lord Mayor visited the boot sale to see the recent improvements made to the car park and to receive £2000 towards his charity fund, from the proceeds of the event. Also attending was Councillor Erika Kirchner who has been liaising with Council officers during the car park renovations. The long-running car boot sale, which goes ahead every Sunday in High Street car park and in the Coastal Housing outdoor car park adjacent to it, recently experienced some disruption pending redevelopments of High Street car park, but normal service has now resumed.[/aoa]
Steve Jones, from the High Street Traders, said: “We launched the boot sale six years ago when the High Street area of Swansea City Centre was struggling for trade on Sundays. The initial idea was to bring people into Swansea so they would spend the day here, shopping and taking advantage of the leisure facilities and food outlets the City has to offer. In this respect it has been very successful, and along with all the regeneration plans which the Council and Coastal Housing have implemented over the past few years, and with support from Swansea BID, the area has improved considerably.
Julie Williamson, who owns the First Call Coffee shops in High Street, added “The High Street car boot sale has now evolved into something much more than somewhere to come to sell unwanted goods. We try to recycle as much as possible and we are encouraging people to be less ‘throwaway,’ people who come to Swansea as a City of Sanctuary are signposted to our boot sale as an ideal place to buy inexpensive furniture, it is disability-friendly, run all year round whatever the weather, ideally sited for some of Swansea’s most vulnerable residents, we support local charities, and it is a focal point for community-based projects.”
Amelia Rudman, Swansea BID Project Manager said: “We are pleased to see the popular High Street car boot sale return to High Street car park. As well as being a well-attended event in its own right the boot sale brings visitors into the heart of Swansea City Centre on Sundays, and with many of our shops and businesses open for trade on Sunday – and with the free Sunday parking in all Council-run City Centre car parks there are lots of incentives to head to Swansea on Sundays.”
