South Wales accountants brighten up Rookwood Hospital facilities

A team of accountants and tax experts from South Wales have pulled on their overalls to support the Prop Appeal at Rookwood Hospital.

Five members of staff from Kilsby Williams came together to renovate the hospital’s outdoor equipment in Cardiff.

The hospital in Llandaff is one of the few spinal rehab units in the UK specialising in rehabilitation care for patients with brain injuries. Together with Cardiff and Vale Health Charity, they launched the Prop Appeal to raise funds for patients who have to re-learn aspects of everyday living due to their conditions.

Maddy O’Neill, a business service manager at Kilsby Williams who led the initiative, chose to join the hospital’s Prop Appeal, renovating Rookwood’s patio ahead of the summer.

Together with enthusiastic co-workers, she painted the hospital’s outdoor furniture so that patients and visitors will be able to enjoy the hospital’s patio throughout the summer months.

Maddy said: “I have wanted to acknowledge the hard work of the staff at Rookwood Hospital ever since a friend of mine spent some time there. When work gave us time-off to give back to the community, I knew I wanted to dedicate my time to their rehabilitation unit and take part in their Prop Appeal.

“By repainting the outdoors furniture, we have been able to brighten up the patio for patients. It is a little gesture, but hopefully one, which will have a great impact, making patients feel more at home so they can enjoy sitting outside with their family and friends.”

The Newport-based accountancy and tax experts has allocated a number of days for staff to spend time supporting local communities every three to six months. The new philanthropic initiative was introduced to develop closer relationships outside of the workplace and boost staff’s morale by enabling them to give back to causes of their choice.

Simon Tee, managing partner at Kilsby Williams, said:

“We are very proud of Maddy and the rest of the team who took time out of their busy working days to restore the patio at Rookwood. At Kilsby Williams, we always encourage our employees to come together as a team both inside and outside of the workplace, whether that is through sport activities or through fundraisers.

“I am thrilled to see the team take this opportunity to give back to the community and take time to volunteer at Rookwood Hospital.”

Last year, a new rehabilitation unit for patients with neurological conditions was announced, which will lead to the closure of the 100-year-old hospital in 2020. All patients at the current hospital will be transferred to the new facility during this period.
