Academics from Swansea University will be among the experts sharing their knowledge at a new science festival this weekend (Sat July 20)

The Bitesize Science Fest will take place in Merthyr Tydfil and aims to provide a family-friendly introduction to science.

Visitors will be able to enjoy series of talks, a magic show and exhibits as well as trying hands-on activities.

Because the free event is being held in conjunction with the town’s annual food festival, organisers are promising it will have a foody twist.

Founder and lead organiser, Swansea University’s Dr Claire Price is delighted at the enthusiasm everyone has shown towards this debut event.

She said: “I am from Merthyr Tydfil and really wanted to get something like this up and running. I held a Messy Science event at St Tydfil’s Old Parish Church last year which was very successful so we realised that there was an appetite for something like this in the area.”

The event, which is being held at St David’s Church in High Street, is being supported by the Learned Society of Wales and has a range of different speakers and exhibitors including S4 Science Outreach, the Marine Conservation Society and the National Museum of Wales.

Among the highlights will be a talk on time by Professor Chris Allton, of Oriel Science, Swansea University’s outreach programme which shares the work of its STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) community, and a magic show by Dr Pamela Styles, a Lecturer in Environmental Awareness for The College, Swansea University.

Dr Price, who is part of the BEACON project team in the University’s Medical School, added: “This is a great opportunity for people to find out more about science in a relaxed, light-hearted way. We would love to see this becoming a regular event and the start of something bigger.”

The event is free but you will need to book your place to attend the talks.
