STAFF members from a Welsh care provider are celebrating after recently (August, 2019) winning awards at the Care Heroes Awards.

Brett Severn from Abacare’s Rhondda Cynon Taf branch won the Changing Lives Award and Jodie Evans from the Bangor branch, won the Care Coordinator of the Year Award.

Peter Angelides, Managing Director at Abacare, which provides care across Wales, said: “We’d like to say a huge ‘congratulations’ too Brett and Jodie on their award wins and would also like to give a special mention to Maria Foley for reaching the finals in the Learner of the Year category and to Neil Howells, who was a finalist in the Lifetime Achievement category at the awards.

“Brett was nominated for his award by his team. Brett has been caring for one of our service users for more than two years and provides him with daily support. Brett has supported him mentally, physically and emotionally and has kept him going when he has faced extremely difficult times and situations.

[/aoa]“The service user says that Brett always goes above and beyond for him, even to the point of requesting extra training. He also says he would not be where he is today without the help, encouragement and support that Brett has given him over the years, which is why we think Brett is truly deserving of this accolade.”

Jodie was also nominated for her award by her team.

Peter added: “Jodie was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 just as we were about to enter a large tender with Anglesey council. Jodie has worked through all of her treatment, even when she was hospitalised, still taking her laptop, doing rotas and taking calls from her hospital bed.

“Throughout her treatment, which she is still undergoing, she has had minimal days away from the office and worked through a very complicated transfer process of staff and service users. She always puts her staff and service users first even when she is struggling with her own health issues. She is a dedicated coordinator to the company, the staff and her service users.

“We have received a number of emails and numerous phone calls from the local authority expressing gratitude for the work Jodie has done in ensuring that people receive the care that they need and in particular in going above and beyond to enable people to return home from hospital in end of life situations. We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the award and Jodie is a real credit to the company.”

The awards, held at The Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, were organised by City & County Healthcare Group, which is one of the largest providers of community-based social care services in the UK.

The awards were judged by the UKHCA, which is a professional association of home care providers from the independent, voluntary, not-for-profit and statutory sectors.
