Construction of specialist care accommodation at the former Bronllwyn Residential Care Home site in Gelli is entering its final months, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council says.
The building’s roof is nearing completion, while mechanical and electrical installations, external works and incoming services are being progressed. Welsh Water is installing the incoming water supply, plaster boarding is under way and work around the outside of the building is continuing.
The development in Colwyn Road is being delivered by Langstone Construction Group and is expected to be completed in early 2027. It will have 14 en-suite rooms with respite provision across three floors.
Facilities for people with a learning disability will include day rooms, sensory rooms, assisted bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, a hairdresser and a training room. A courtyard will be provided outside, while the car park and site access will be retained.
Once outstanding finishing work on the upper roof is completed, the relevant scaffolding can be removed. The tower crane will also be removed after that work.
Councillor Gareth Caple, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, said: “It is fantastic to see the work site in Gelli really begin to resemble the finished project we’ve seen in artist impressions, as the Council invests in a first-class residential accommodation specialising in providing care for adults and older people with a disability. The project is also bringing the old care home site back into use, preventing it from falling into disrepair.”
He said the council had provided three new extra care accommodations since 2020, including Maesyffynnon in Aberaman and Cwrt yr Orsaf in Graig, and was building a mixed care development in Mountain Ash. He added that future projects were planned for Ferndale and Church Village, with the Ferndale dementia-care project receiving planning consent in August.
“Residents will notice the large tower crane being removed over the period ahead,” Councillor Caple said.
“The project is now on course for completion in early 2027. I’m grateful to our contractor for their commitment to delivering the project, and the community for their cooperation with the ongoing works. I look forward to the next stages of work as we make progress towards the building being completed.”
