Following the unprecedented success of last year’s campaign, Wales’ leading first aid charity, St John Cymru, are hoping to train more people than ever in lifesaving first aid during September as part of ‘Save a Life September’.
The annual campaign, which launched on Sunday 1st September, aims to train an extra 6,500 potential lifesavers across Wales, increasing from 5,000 in 2018.
Each September, the nation’s leading first aid charity offers free, 2-hour training sessions across Wales teaching people simple techniques which could one day help to save someone’s life.
Sessions give people the knowledge and confidence to deal with an emergency situation and cover the following scenarios:
- how to perform CPR
- what to do if someone is choking
- how to treat severe bleeding
- how to put someone in the recovery position
Acting Chief Executive for St John Cymru, Helen Smith, said:
“As Wales’ leading first aid charity we believe first aid should be available for everyone whenever and wherever they need it.
“First aid can provide people with a vial lifeline in an emergency situation and if more people knew how to give first aid, more lives could be saved,” she added.
Just one in five people know what to do in an emergency* and over two thirds of people in Wales lack the confidence to help someone experiencing a cardiac arrest.**
St John Cymru are appealing for people to help change this by joining them at one of its local first aid awareness sessions and becoming a potential lifesaver.
