The latest restaurant to arrive in Cardiff, Honest Burgers, has opened its doors to the public on Church Street.

Known for their Great British burgers, which they make in their own butchery, Honest Burgers are a welcome edition to the city of Cardiff.
With every new restaurant that opens promising to have the best burger in town, I can honestly say (no pun intended), Honest Burgers is true to their roots.
Honest Burgers was co-founded by friends Tom Barton and Philip Eeles in Brighton 2009, where they started out cooking great British burgers in a field at a local food festival. They made everything from scratch and event cycled eight miles every day to pick up the best beef available.

With every new opening, they introduce a city special, offering something local and a little different, and Cardiff is no exception.
Collaborating with local beer heroes Tiny Rebel, the Cardiff burger special sees a combination of Honest beef (from its own butchery), candied bacon, Hafod organic cheddar, Cwtch leeks, mustard mayo, lamb’s lettuce and pickles.
Using just British chuck steak and rib cap, Honest chops the meat rather than mincing it (which keeps the flavour in and the texture more natural and tender).
The second burger that we were eager to try was the Karma Burger – they had us with the promise of Karma bacon gravy. Don’t know what that is? Neither did we… but it tasted great!
The Karma Burger is a special they’re running until the 29th September in collaboration with Karma Cola. I hadn’t heard of them until yesterday, but they’re doing great things, giving back directly to the growers, farmers and their families. Every purchase includes a donation back to their foundation.
All burgers are served medium-pink as standard (or however you prefer it). As someone who often has their meat cooked ‘well done’, this is a worthy recommendation by Honest, and one I’d recommend you take. True to their word, it does hold flavour.
The rosemary-salted chips are absolutely delicious. They don’t skimp on the portion sizes either.
And in case you were wondering, they don’t serve desserts. Not that they need to, go and you’ll see why.
Honest and Tiny Rebel have also collaborated on a new beer just for the Cardiff restaurant. Church St Pale is a sunny yellow 4.3% session pale ale with a citrus aroma and satsuma, lime and grapefruit hop flavours.
Speaking ahead of the opening, Tom Barton, co-founder of Honest Burgers, said: “We’ve wanted to work with Tiny Rebel for ages. They make great beers and they’ve been great people to work with too. They’ve got a cracking business in Newport and continue to invest in their community. For our Cardiff special we braise leeks in their Cwtch red ale – the bitter hops work well with the sweet candied bacon and rich Hafod Welsh organic cheddar.”
Brad Cummings, co-founder of Tiny Rebel, added: “It’s been fun making a beer for Honest Burgers, and Church St pale is the perfect beer to accompany any of the burgers on the menu. We made sure the flavours and hop profile worked with both meat and meat-free burgers so nobody misses out.”
If beer’s not your thing, there’s the Honest G&T made with small batch Honest Gin (using botanicals found in Honest’s kitchens, including cucumber and dill), or the Church Street exclusive Cardiff Pink G&T, made with Benjamin Hall Strawberry Gin, Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic and fresh strawberries. Benjamin Hall Strawberry Gin is made nearby at the Hensol Castle Distillery, getting its flavour and pink hue from fresh Monmouthshire strawberries.

Restaurant playlists have been provided by Cardiff Market legends Kellys Records – some say, the oldest second-hand record store in the UK – who have specially selected hundreds of tracks spanning five decades of hits from 1969 to today.
If you’re looking for a decent burger, you should go and give them a try.
It’s not the cheapest burger you’ll find, but you get what you pay for.
