    Volvo Ocean Race Cardiff Welcomes Mermaid Quay on Board

    This month the world’s most famous sailing series arrives in Cardiff and Mermaid Quay is the latest host city sponsorship partner to be announced, as the international sporting event makes its way to the Welsh Capital.

    The fleet, which are expected to arrive on Monday 28thMay following a 2,900 nautical mile voyage from America across the Atlantic, will remain in Cardiff Bay for a two week stopover and Cardiff Bay and the newlydevelopedAlexandra Head will be transformed into an impressive race village, hosting a free festival of entertainment.

    Just a short walk from the Race Village and set in a stunning waterfront location in the heart of Cardiff Bay, Mermaid Quay hosts over 30 restaurants, bars and cafés with cuisine from around the world. It is also home to Cardiff’s first and finest comedy club, The Glee and the Aquabus waterbus service which can take you from the Bay to the city centre along the scenic River Taff.

    Mermaid Quay’s distinctive architecture is inspired by its maritime position and heritage, featuring decking, towers, balconies, terraces, colonnades and bridges – with lots of outdoor seating from which to enjoy the view when the weather is nice.

    Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Peter Bradbury said:

    “Mermaid Quay has established itself as one of Cardiff’s most popular visitor destinations. Over nearly two decades it has continued to offer something for everyone with its relaxing and vibrant atmosphere. Mermaid Quay will offer a wonderful experience for those visiting the city for the first time as well as local’s hoping to soak up the excitement of Volvo Ocean Race. It is set to be a fantastic event and will strengthen Cardiff’s reputation as a waterside city.”
