Review & Pictures: Royal Welsh Spring Festival 2018

Taking place at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells this weekend (19 and 20 May) is the annual Royal Welsh Spring Festival, a fantastic weekend-long celebration of smallholding and rural life.

However, you’d be mistaken to think that’s what the Royal Welsh festivals are all about. With plenty of things to see and do, the festival is more than just about animals, and you can easily walk around for hours without seeing a single one. We’re not saying that’s a good or bad thing, but just to put it into perspective that the festival has a lot to offer visitors.

Every Royal Welsh Festival event is packed full of interesting things to see, delicious food and drink, live music, country sports, livestock, shopping, demonstrations and fun, and have-a-go activities – so you will genuinely find something for everyone here.

We’re a family of three from the city (Cardiff), just an hours drive away, and we easily spent the day at the festival and didn’t get to go around everything. The festival promises “to be the perfect day out for all” – and it is!

We had previously attended the Royal Welsh Winter Fair last year, which we really enjoyed, despite the weather not being so great (but it was winter). We did say at the time that we should come back in the Spring/Summer to really make the most of the country air.

This is what we got up to on our visit the Spring Festival this weekend:

    1. Arts & crafts for the little one

Plenty of activities for children to get involved in at the Spring Festival

    2. Plenty of opportunities to treat yourself (and we did)

    3. Let us tell you about the food, ohh the food!

    4. Cooling off and listening to live music

    5. Festival of Welsh Land Rover Display

    6. The farming machinery on display (and available to buy)

    7. Yes, there were animals (1,800 livestock to be exact)

    8. The smallholding demos and talks

    9. Game hunting display in the glorious sunshine

    10. And of course, the competitions!
